My
Dad- Billy McPhail
Former
Celtic Football Pplayer.
My
dad was born 2 February 1928. At the age
of 28, he was signed by Celtic for whom he played for just over a
season before injury permanently ended his playing career. My
dad had a great respect for all his fellow players, albeit Celtic or
Rangers. He
was a true gentleman on the pitch and off the pitch. Bob
Crampsey a well known
football writer often wrote of my dad as the "Dartanian of
Scottish Football". As he had such grace on the football pitch
especially as he flew through the air heading the ball.
In
the 50's the footballs were made of leather thus when wet they were
extremely heavy. Murdo Mcleod Ex Celtic, once took part in a TV
documentary which illustrated the effects of such a ball at various
speeds, the effects were quite alarming.
Despite
the short time that my dad played, it was at Celtic that he he found
most fame particularly after scoring a hat-trick in the 1957 League
Cup Final.
My
dad loved to walk for miles and claimed that this is what kept him
fit.
Sadly
he died of Alzheimer's
Disease, it was never proven that the many knocks on his
head from heading the ball contributed to him developing this
terrible disease. What do you think?
